課程概述

In Sophomore Composition students refine their skill in presenting ideas in the clear and powerful manner expected in Academic English compositions.

The course begins with a review of paragraphing skills and English grammar trouble spots. This review is crucial to developing strong compositions, so we'll strive to establish good paragraph writing techniques. When the class has a good command of paragraphing, we will move on to longer writing. The key is to be sure all students have a good background in the organization of ideas in paragraphing before moving to longer writings.

Focus then shifts to writing five paragraph essays with clear thesis statements. Students can expect ample practice in writing skills and reviewing the writing of other students in class.

Typical class format: Approximately one-third of class time will be spent on in-class discussions of the textbook; one-third in small groups to applying the concepts from the textbook; and one-third on “writing” either individually or in peer review groups. Students will also have ample time in class for mini-conferences on their writing, both to improve their writing as well as to share and enjoy the ideas they have written.

Students will use American English in their writing assignments for this course.

Students should note that the syllabus listed below is tentative and will be revised to accommodate the writing level of students enrolled in class. Be sure to check the online syllabus frequently as it may change

Grades will be determined by
(1) preparation and participation in class (textbook exercises),
(2) pre-writing and outlining journals (5 entries),
(3) student work (paragraphs and essay) and,
(4) a reflective essay which must be emailed to the instructor by December 27, 2011

課程目標
The course objectives are to develop and refine the English composition skills needed to write compositions. These include using strong paragraph and thesis organization, cohesion and coherence, rhetorical modes and idea presentation.
課程要求
required textbook: "Essay Skills (2nd edition)" by John Langan. McGraw Hill. Available at Bookman Books.

(1) punctual class attendance. Students need to attend class in order to improve their spoken English and listening skills. So, it only makes sense to attend every class. To encourage this practice, this course will strictly follow the university attendance policy. If you must miss a class, be sure to print out the student absence document and give it to the teacher within the time limit. (Explanation: The computer-based absence notification system used by the university does not include your English name, so it is difficult for the teacher to use it. Only hard copies (paper copies) of the absence document will be accepted. A copy of the form is available on the announcements page of this class webpage.)

(2) participation in peer review groups. Students will be engaged in small group work during class time. Each student is expected to be well-prepared for this work and to contribute enthusiastically to it. The group effort will influence how much is learned by the group: any student not fully participating will hinder the progress of the group.

(3) writing assignments (paragraphs and compositions). Our syllabus is designed to promote student writing skills in English. It is very important that all students keep up with the assignments. All assignments must be handed in on time; late assignments will not be accepted. If you find you are having a problem completing your assignment on time, contact the teacher as soon as possible to make arrangements for submitting an assignment late. Contact the teacher at class email address given on the course syllabus in class.

(4) Final reflective essay must be emailed by December 27, 2011

(5) Prewriting and Outlining Journal. Success in writing Academic English composition comes with practice. To facilitate this process, students will keep a Prewriting and Outlining Journal in which they will select five different topics on which to use prewriting to generate a detailed outline for a paragraph or composition.
